MP reacts to report of Nottinghamshire NHS mental health service being ‘inadequate’

The CQC published a critical report late last year after carrying out unannounced inspections of adult and elderly acute mental health units and psychiatric intensive care units, but now the services are unsafe and overall rated as insufficient.

An unspecified number of staff assaulted patients at Mansfield and Highbury Hospital’s Sherwood Oaks complex. Employees at Bulwell’s Highbury facility also sometimes falsified patient records.

The Nottingham MP says it’s worrying.

Alex Norris, Labor MP for Nottingham North, said:

“I think, like others in the community, I was concerned about reading what was in the report.

“These are very important facilities that care for some of the most vulnerable people in our city and beyond and, as I say, it was very worrying to read their contents.

Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust apologized and stressed that improvements were underway.

It was revealed earlier this year that more than 30 staff across the organization had been suspended.

He is under intense scrutiny over his dealings with Valdo Calocan, the Nottingham attack killer. Last June, he stabbed school janitor Ian Coates and his students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley Kumar (Grace’s father) to death. Grace’s father, Grace O’Malley Kumar, has wider questions about the state of Nottingham’s mental health services.

He says today’s coverage is terrible.

“I’m appalled that we haven’t seen any improvement and in fact the opposite has happened. It’s just horrifying. After the events of last year, anyone in a senior position knows that something very frightening has happened. I think you thought it happened. We better start looking into services.”
