Patients at the hospital that treated murderer Valdo Caloocan were discharged too soon and left in the community in an even worse condition, an NHS safety watchdog has found.

A report has revealed serious failings by Nottinghamshire Hospitals Foundation to protect the safety of patients and the public. Reviews from the Care Quality Commission (CQC)).

According to the report, more than 1,200 patients are waiting to be seen by community services. Meanwhile, hundreds of people receiving treatment did not have a clinician to oversee their care, the CQC revealed.

The review was launched by the government following the conviction of murderer Valdo Karokaine, who was in the care of the NHS trust’s community services.

The CQC review said patients were reporting crisis services to be “useless” or harmful to their health.

The three broad areas of concern highlighted in the CQC report are:

• High demand for services meant long wait times for care and a lack of supervision for those waiting.

• The trust does not have enough staff to keep patients safe in the community and some hospital services.

• Senior leaders in trusts do not have clear oversight of risks and issues within the service.
