The Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspects and rates all health and social care services across England to determine the quality of care people receive.
Five care homes in south Essex are currently rated as ‘inadequate’ by the CQC, according to the latest assessment.
This is a list of all care homes rated ‘inadequate’ in South Essex.
1. Cherrycroft, Westcliff:
Cherrycroft is a care home that can accommodate up to 10 people. The service supports people with learning disabilities and mental health needs.
The inspector said: “People were not supported to have maximum choice and control over their lives, and staff did not support them in their best interests in the least restrictive way possible.
“The environment was not always safe or clean. Health and safety checks were not consistently completed.”
Inspection date: December 6, 2023.
2. Westminster House at Westcliff:
Westminster House Residential Care Limited is a residential care home providing regulated activities of accommodation and personal care for up to 12 people.
Inspectors said: “Providing care to people was not always safe. For all risks to people’s safety and well-being, not enough detail was provided on how to mitigate the identified risks.
“Leadership, management and governance arrangements did not provide assurance that the service was properly guided.”
Inspection date: May 10, 2023.
3. Whittingham House, Southend:
Whittingham House is a care home that provides accommodation for up to 70 people with nursing and personal care needs, including people with dementia.
The inspector said: “The provider did not identify or manage health and safety risks and hazards.
“Risks are not always safely monitored or managed, for example risks related to falls, movement, handling, distress reactions, eating and drinking.
“The lack of information and follow-up across people’s care plans meant people were at risk of harm.”
Inspection date: June 6, 2023.
4. Mountdale Nursery School (Lee):
Mountdale Nursing Home is a residential care home providing regulated activities of personal care and nursing care for up to 24 people.
Inspectors said: ‘Staff did not understand how to protect people from abuse and harm.
“Healthcare providers and staff received training on how to recognize and report abuse, but they didn’t know how to apply it to keep people safe.
“There was a lack of clear leadership and oversight. Responsibility and accountability arrangements were not clear.”
Inspection date: November 8, 2023.
5. Ashingdon Hall, Rochford:
Ashingdon Hall is a residential care home providing regulated activities of accommodation and personal care for up to 28 people.
The inspector said: “Not all risks to people’s safety and well-being have been identified and recorded.
“People’s privacy and dignity have not always been promoted and respected.
“People were not supported to have maximum choice and control over their lives, and staff did not support them in their best interests in the least restrictive way possible.”
Inspection date: December 4, 2023.
