Norfolk’s biggest hospital continues to put past struggles behind it, with care inspectors hailing “significant improvements” to maternity services.
Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital has struggled to provide maternity care in recent years, and less than a decade ago was forced to turn away pregnant women due to staff shortages.
However, the department has now had its Care Quality Commission rating upgraded, with inspectors praising the “significant improvements” in services provided to new families.
Stephanie Pease, director of midwifery at the hospital, said: “We are delighted that the improvements we have made have been recognized by the CQC. This is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the whole team.”
“We are particularly pleased that we have over-recruited midwifery roles to ensure safe staffing levels.”
Previously, the service was rated as requiring improvement due to concerns about staffing levels and resulting low midwife morale.
However, inspectors acknowledged the work undertaken to address these issues since the last inspection in November 2022.
CQC’s Carolyn Jenkinson said: “We are delighted to see the trust making significant improvements.
“We are impressed by how our leaders have created a person-centered, open culture where people can fearlessly voice their concerns and be heard.
“Staff told us they felt respected, supported and valued, and that they worked in a fair and inclusive environment.
“Staff have clearly worked hard to improve the quality of care they provide since our last inspection, which is why we have rated our maternity service as Good.”
Beth Gibson, director of obstetric services at the hospital, said: “Our open culture has been recognized and we have been selected as one of our two maternal health centers to improve outcomes for women with pre-existing conditions and acute complications. We are particularly pleased that our efforts to establish one have been recognized.” pregnancy. “
